I've been diagnosed with HIV since 1995. Never went back to the physician for treatment because I was in denial because at that time there were many false positives and I believed that I'd fit in that category. I felt that my life was over. I'd never be married, wouldn't have anymore children. A death sentence of loneliness, was my fate, so I thought. I was healthy, didn't look sickly or skinny, I just didn't fit the description that the media tends to feed into society. I just began my meds last year 2006 when I was retested and the test came back positive again. No one in my family knew my status because I didn't know how they would react to me being positive. I'm a single parent of a wonderful 16 year young man, who took the information hard. He didn't talk to me for about 3 months. It was as though we were strangers passing on the streets. That was my most hurtful rejection I'd received thus far. Other rejections can whenever I'd disclose my status to pote
ntial suitors. They'd run for the hills as though I was infected with the bubonic plague. Just because I'm infected doesn't define the type of woman I am and always will be. My positive attitude is what keeps me going. When I began my meds, my t-cell count was 36, now my viral load is low and my t-cell count is now 527. I have a wonderful infectious diseases physician. He's extremely patient with me and tells it like it is. I am so very blessed by Him and Dr. Yu in bringing me back to health. I just wanted to tell my testimony. I'm proud that I've made it this far. My son once told me that I was dying from HIV, I told him, "Ryian I'm not dying from it, I'm living with it". Our relationship has gotten back on track and I love him so very much!
